The time has finally come! The 30th season of the WNBA tipped off on May 8. We are in for a treat!
As soon as one season ends, I am immediately ready for the next one. The league had a seismic shift. One of the main reasons for this is the new CBA. The players are finally getting that cake, dough, munyon, dolla dolla bills yall!
It was a long hard-fought battle, but the agreement was made just in time. I was so worried that the season would not start on time. Now, I am stress-free and ready to fan out!
If you know me, then you are very aware of the fact that I am a Dallas Wings fan. Being a fan of this team has been something else. When it comes to sports, I am a homer, but when it comes to the Wings, I am not a fan of the team by default.
I was a fan of the W from the very beginning. At the tender age of ten, I was a Houston Comets fan. One of my earliest memories is when my mom had some friends that went on a visit in Houston and they brought me a Tina Thompson jersey. I still have it with the print peeling and all.
I loved the league so much that I chose which college I wanted to go to based off of the teams. I originally planned to go to school out of state, until I realized how much it would cost.
So, the University of Houston was it! A classmate was a dancer for the team, so I would occasionally get free tickets. I lived right off of the rail so they were easy to get to and I always had a great time.
Unfortunately, the team disbanded before my last year in college. I was near tears when I got that notification on my phone as I was headed to class. The mattress guy really fumbled the bag with them smh. Now, I am overjoyed that they will be returning in 2027.
People said the league would fold. They said it would not be successful. Now, here we are 30 years later, and the popularity continues to grow people! We now have 15 teams with more on the way.
Here’s to 30 years and cheers to 30 more. This season is going to be unlike no other. What are looking forward to the most this year?
